Hi Folks

Hoping I can get steered in the right direction. I am looking to buy a new family tent, and wanted to know where the best place to go tent shopping is in Melbourne?

Ideally its a place where the tents are set up and you can have a good look around to work out whats going to be best?

Thanks Heaps

Twalis

Where u should go shopping depends mostly on how much you are looking to spend / the type of tent you are after.

Id suggest watching ebay etc. for a used but in good condition (most are) old Canvas touring tent by Freedom Camping or Southern Cross Canvas. SCC can still be purchased new however the cost will be easily 1.5-2.5thousand dollars.

These really are the ultimate in touring tents and properly cared for will easily last our lifetimes.

If you do not want to spend that sort of money then id suggest looking at the typical outdoor shops ie. Rays Outdoors & Anaconda. There is also Van Cruiser Caravans Camping & Leisure in Carrum Downs, they have a very large showroom with lots of tents on display (no affiliation, have only purchased some chairs from them in the passed) but they do have a massive showroom worth looking over if they aren't to far from you.

And finally, if your after a more 'serious' Bushwalking / Hiking tent; 4 season, then id strongly recommend checking out Paddy Pallin and Bogong Equipment in the Melbourne CBD.

Travis.

Cheers for the tip Travis. Headed out to van cruiser today. Good selection of tents and camper trailers - lots to think about.

We are after a good family touring tent - will keep an eye on eBay as well

Thanks again

I have purchased products from Southern Cross Canvas Bayswater Vic and have found them great with advice and are prepared to costom make or modify to your wishes.

Admittedly there not the cheapest around but you get want you pay for. Good quality Aussie canvas and made locally with no problems with warranty.

I have a Family Tourer tent I got from Freedom Tents over 18 years ago and its still going strong. Quick and easy to set up, 4 pegs and its ready in about 2 mins.

Plenty of room for a family of 4 or 5 at a pinch, folds up into a 900 mm square so its easy to store in the back or on the roof, pole bag is a bit longer.
